Neo-Traditional Planning
Neo-traditional planning refers to a style of laying out communities or housing developments. This style incorporates elements of the past, along with contemporary housing, to make communities more walkable. Neo-traditional communities typically have smaller lots for each home but more open space that can be used by all residents. The garages may be located at the rear of a home, which improves the appearance of the street and tends to create a more sociable street life. Neo-traditional planning also emphasizes the community's need to be sustainable, and often the developers will try to use alternative energy sources as much as possible for supplying the energy needs of the common areas and any buildings. Depending on the size of the neo-traditional community, developers may set aside land for retail shopping, schools or light commercial purposes. Many neo-traditional communities have a town center that's within walking distance of the neighborhoods within the community.
